Thematic Almutens
The Concept of a Thematic Almuten
In medieval astrology (both the Arabic tradition and the European tradition that adopted it), an Almuten (from the Arabic al-mubtazz — “the victor”) is the planet that accumulates the highest number of essential dignity points (domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term, face) in a specific degree of the zodiac.
A Thematic Almuten is an evolution of this concept used to analyze specific areas of life (themes). Instead of looking for the strongest planet for the entire chart (Almuten Figuris) or for a single house cusp, the astrologer looks for the planet that acts as the primary ruler of a specific theme (e.g., wealth, children, marriage, or death).
To find a Thematic Almuten, the astrologer would take several chart points related to the desired theme and sum up the points of the planets ruling those points. The planet that “won” by having the highest total score across all these places became the Thematic Almuten.
Example (Almuten of Wealth / Property)
To find the planet that describes the native’s financial status, a medieval astrologer would evaluate planetary dignities in the degrees of:
- The II house cusp.
- The ruler of the II house.
- Jupiter (the natural significator of wealth).
- The Part of Fortune (Lot of Fortune) and its dispositor.
- A special Arabic Lot of Wealth (Lot of Property).
The planet that scored the highest total points across all these points combined was recognized as the Thematic Almuten of wealth and became the primary indicator of this area in the person’s life, even if it wasn’t physically located in the II house or ruling it directly.
Implementation in the Program
On the left side of the main window, a list of available Thematic Almutens is displayed. This list can be edited via the context menu: you can create a new Almuten, delete, rename, or clone an existing one. If you click on any Almuten, it will automatically be calculated on the right for the selected chart (displaying the planet with the maximum points). Detailed calculation information will also be shown on the right side of the main window.
