Solar Fire on a Mac: what your options really are

Solar Fire 9 is Windows-only, and Astrolabe does not officially support it on macOS; the announced Solar Fire X for Mac has not shipped yet (as of September 2026). If you work on a Mac today, you have three realistic paths — and only one of them doesn't involve installing Windows.

The three paths

1. A virtual machine: Parallels + Windows + Solar Fire

The official workaround. It preserves your Solar Fire habits and files — at the price of a Parallels subscription, a Windows license, and a second operating system living inside your Mac. On Apple Silicon this is effectively the only virtualization route left: the free options, VirtualBox and VMware, do not run there. Reasonable if you have a decade of Solar Fire muscle memory; heavy if what you actually want is to cast and analyse charts.

2. Astro Gold for macOS

The native app closest to the Solar Fire family ($249.99 one-time). Clean charting, dials, interpretations, up to 154 asteroids and minor bodies. A good choice for consulting work that stays within standard techniques — less so if your practice needs research depth: large asteroid sets, Uranian tools beyond points on a dial, traditional time-lord systems side by side.

3. A professional astroprocessor built for the Mac: ZEUS

ZEUS is a regular macOS application — Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, macOS 10.13+ — and is built as a full astroprocessor rather than a charting app: over 22,000 asteroids, the complete Hamburg School toolkit, traditional and Vedic techniques, a 3D celestial sphere, astrocartography, event databases, interpretation texts. One license covers Mac and Windows machines on the same account. Pricing is time-based with no subscription mechanics: $20 a month, $48 a quarter, $149 a year — and the demo is free for 21 days with everything unlocked.

A fair way to decide: keep whichever option you are drawn to on this page open, install the ZEUS demo alongside, and run your last three consultations through both. Three weeks costs nothing and answers the question better than any comparison table.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Mac version of Solar Fire?

Not yet. The current Solar Fire 9 is Windows-only, and Astrolabe states it does not officially support running it on a Mac — the workarounds they describe (Boot Camp, Parallels, VirtualBox) are provided as a courtesy. On Apple Silicon the free routes, VirtualBox and VMware, do not work at all. Astrolabe has announced Solar Fire X with Mac support, but as of September 2026 it has not been released.

What about Solar Fire X?

Solar Fire X is Astrolabe's announced next version, described as running on both PCs and Macs. Its release has been postponed more than once — first "late spring", then "August" 2026 — and as of September 2026 it is not available. When it ships, the comparison will change; until then the options on this page are what actually exists. And even then, the differences in price model, the Uranian toolkit and astromapping remain.

What does running Solar Fire in Parallels actually cost?

Solar Fire itself (about $360), plus a Parallels subscription, plus a Windows license — and the ongoing overhead of keeping a second operating system updated inside your Mac. It works, and for someone with years of Solar Fire habits it may be worth it. For everyone else it is a lot of friction for casting charts.

Can I move my chart files from Solar Fire?

Yes. Export your charts from Solar Fire in Quick*Chart format (a single .qck file can hold your whole chart collection), then run the built-in ZEUS Converter (see the manual: Session → Converter) — it reads QuickChart, ZET and AstroDatabank files and turns them into a ZEUS database.
